The Real Truth About Boudoir: What Women Get Wrong (and Why It’s Stopping Them From an Amazing Experience)

If you’ve ever thought about doing a boudoir session and then immediately felt a wave of Nope, not me, I promise you’re not alone. In fact, I’d say most women who finally take the leap have spent months—sometimes years—talking themselves out of it first. We’re experts at telling ourselves why we’re not ready, not confident enough, not “that kind of woman,” or not whatever imaginary standard we think boudoir requires.

But here’s the thing: most of those hesitations come from totally false ideas about what boudoir actually is.

"Boudoir is only for perfect bodies."

This is the big one, right? The whisper in your mind that says, “I’ll book a session once I lose weight,” or “Maybe after I tone this or fix that.” We grow up believing beauty has a very specific shape, and if we don’t match it, we’re not allowed to feel beautiful.

Boudoir has never been about perfection. It’s about presence. It’s about confidence you didn’t know you had. It’s about seeing yourself in a completely different light, literally and emotionally.

Women of all sizes, ages, and insecurities walk into a boudoir studio. And they all leave realizing they didn’t need to change a single thing about their bodies to be worthy of feeling beautiful.

Our boudoir experience really is designed for women by women. That’s why we have our team members go through the process of doing a boudoir session so they can relate to the vulnerability you may be feeling.

"Boudoir means being naked."

Another myth that stops so many women from even considering a session.

Boudoir isn’t about stripping down—it’s about opening up. You can wear a cozy sweater, a silk robe, a bodysuit, a favorite dress, lingerie, or yes, sometimes nothing at all… but only if you want to.

You control the level of vulnerability you bring to the experience. Some women go bold. Some stay soft and subtle. Most end up somewhere in the middle.

There is no right way to do boudoir.

"I need expensive lingerie.”

Nope. Some of the most breathtaking boudoir photos happen with the simplest outfits—a white button-down shirt, a bralette, or even just using a blanket. You can absolutely go out and treat yourself to something new, but you don’t have to. Your comfort and personality matter more than price tags.

The truth is, you already own something that will photograph beautifully.

We want your session to be a reflection of you. You don’t need to run out last minute to find outfits you’ll never wear again. Boudoir is about finding the inner beauty in things. There’s a special sentiment with using the same t-shirt you cuddle in at night or wearing that date night dress that you always get complimented on.

"I’m too old for this."

The idea that boudoir is reserved for women under 30 is outdated, harmful, and completely untrue.Every stage of womanhood brings a new kind of beauty. We’ve seen women in pretty much every stage of life. Whether it’s reclaiming your femininity after divorce or celebrating turning 50, there’s always a beauty behind the stage of life you’re in.

"I’m Just Doing Boudoir as a Gift for my partner."

Sure, it can be an incredible gift for someone you love, but what most women don’t realize until afterward is that the real gift is to themselves.

Boudoir is deeply personal. It’s for the woman who wants to reconnect with herself, who wants to see beauty in her reflection again, who wants to feel brave. Whether you’re going through a transition, healing, celebrating, or simply curious, boudoir is a love letter to yourself.

A partner might receive the photos, but you receive the transformation.

"My photos might end up online."

This is a reasonable fear. Women of many different career fields come in nervous that their employer or coworkers might see their photos. Your images stay completely private unless you specifically give permission otherwise.

You’re the only one who decides how your photos are used and what you’re comfortable sharing.

We do have many women who feel so liberated after their session that they want to share their stories with others. They want other women to know that they can have such an empowering experience once they put themselves out there to try.

We respect your privacy at all times. This is also why we work as an all female time. We want our studio environment to feel safe and empowering at all times.

"I’ll feel awkward the whole time."

You might feel a little awkward at first, but that feeling doesn’t last long.

Once the session starts flowing, there's laughter, dancing, a lot of “Omg, I didn’t know I could look like that!” The moment where you see the back of the camera and everything shifts. It’s a total mentality shift.

Awkwardness turns into excitement. Nerves turn into confidence. You get to see a new version of yourself that’s been there the whole time.

"Boudoir is too risque for me."

Boudoir isn’t always about being sexy. It can be artistic, soft, elegant, playful, powerful, edgy, romantic, or even cozy. Your personality shapes the session, not the other way around.

Think of boudoir as a spectrum, and you get to choose exactly where you want to land.

We also use this spectrum to guide our session flow. We like to start with the most comfortable outfit you have and work our way down. By the end of the session, you’ll be feeling more confident to show just a little more than the last outfit.

We will always ask what your boundaries are to make sure we stay aligned with your vision! There is never any pressure to be sexy or to show skin. Boudoir is about showing off your personality, not just your body.

"I should wait until I feel more confident."

This one breaks my heart because it’s the myth that keeps the most women from doing something transformative.

There’s never a good time to do anything. There will always be an excuse not to do it.

You don’t need to lose weight, change your body, or hit some imaginary milestone. You are worthy of this experience right now, exactly as you are.

"I won’t look like the women in the photos."

Every woman you see in a photographer’s portfolio was just as nervous as you. They had insecurities too. They wondered if they’d look awkward or weird or “not sexy enough.” But with guidance, lighting, posing, and support, they discovered sides of themselves they didn’t even know existed.

You will too.

The Bottom Line: You’re More Ready Than You Think

Boudoir isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being present. It’s about letting yourself feel beautiful in your own skin without apology, without comparison, without the pressure to fix anything first.

If you’ve been hesitating or telling yourself you’re not “the type” to do boudoir, let this be your sign: you absolutely are.
